General Description:

The League of Conservation Voters Education Fund (LCVEF) works to turn environmental values into national, state and local priorities. LCVEF, in collaboration with our state LCVEF partners, advocates for strong environmental protections, organizes and amplifies the voices of communities of color and other key constituencies who are disproportionately impacted by climate change, air pollution, water contamination and other issues, and engages people in the democratic process in order to enact strong environmental laws.

LCVEF has developed one of the most effective nonpartisan voter participation programs in the nation. We pioneered tools such as membership list enhancement, and we continue to lead in areas such as mobilization, profiling and modeling, issue ID and control group testing and high-end analytics. We are externally recognized for our leadership in the space, such as the most recent Independent Voter Registration Report where LCVEF was ranked the most efficient program in the nation—with an 83 percent rate of successful registrations—for the third consecutive election cycle.

Through our national vote-by-mail, voter registration and GOTV efforts, LCVEF has become the leading national environmental organization working to encourage communities under-represented in our nation’s democratic practices to participate in elections. We increasingly play a major role in pro-democracy ballot measures that reduce barriers to voting at the state and local level. Even outside the scope of environmental organizations, we are one of the largest players in the civic engagement space, with a focus on increasing involvement of communities of color and young people in the democratic process.

LCVEF is seeking a Voting Rights Program Director who is a strong base builder, coalition builder, and fierce advocate for equitable and accessible democratic processes at every level of government and in every community. The ideal candidate thrives on building and growing programs and is creative, motivated and inspires leadership and collaboration from partners and peers. They should have a penchant for detail, exceeding expectations and a desire to be a team player in a growing, dynamic organization.

Responsibilities:

  • Work with national LCVEF staff and state affiliates to develop, implement and evaluate policy advocacy, coalition-building and organizing campaigns that advance voting rights and protect against voter suppression.
  • Assist state affiliates in the hiring, training, and strategic oversight of voting rights staff at the state level and support their efforts to execute programs and build partnerships.
  • Work with LCVEF teams to develop and test effective and new organizing and mobilizing strategies and tools that expand people’s access and participation to our democratic processes.
  • Analyze and prepare reports on budgets, campaign and program progress for state affiliates, LCVEF leadership and provide timely updates for grant reports and other donor-related needs.
  • Work closely with the LCVEF digital team to develop online campaigns and tools that increase online engagement around democracy and voting rights issues.
  • Work with the civic engagement and LCVEF communications team to develop and implement communications plans that tell the stories of everyday people fighting to protect their democratic rights, showcase the momentum around restoring our democracy and develop a compelling narrative connecting environmental and democracy issues and impacts.
  • Identify opportunities to advance our democracy and voting rights goals and program, including being an active member of national coalitions, forming new alliances, and connecting our state affiliates to opportunities to advance their leadership.
  • Work with the LCVEF Legal and Finance departments and our state affiliates to ensure compliance and accurate and timely reporting of all activities.

Qualifications:

  • Work Experience: Minimum of 4 years of experience working on policy advocacy, voter registration, labor or community organizing campaigns; experience rooted in social, racial and economic justice preferred. Demonstrated track-record of effectively managing complex programs in multiple geographies. Experience working with national, state and/or local coalitions. Experience managing complex budgets and metric-driven campaigns or programs. Experience managing, supervising or coaching staff and/or volunteers strongly preferred. Experience working with a national organization who has state affiliates or chapters is a plus.
  • Skills: Excellent writing and verbal communication skills, including ability to write high-level reports and issue advocacy plans and be an inspirational and direct communicator. Ability to consistently integrate a deep understanding of key racial justice and equity concepts into projects and interactions by addressing structural implications and disproportionate impacts of policies, activities, and decisions on race, class and other group identities within the context of job responsibilities and projects. Commitment and familiarity with the tools to measure and track program and campaign progress and outcomes. Familiarity with how communications strategies advance programmatic and advocacy goals. Works well in a fast-paced environment and able to multitask without sacrificing quality of work. Exhibits strong leadership traits including reliability, consistency, attention to detail, self-motivation, self-awareness and emotional intelligence. Ability to represent LCVEF to a variety of audiences and through a variety of mediums.
  • Cultural Competence: Demonstrated cultural competency and familiarity with the complexity of issues and obstacles facing communities’ of color participation in U.S. democracy. Must possess a personal and professional commitment to advancing racial justice and equity through all aspects of work and contributing to an inclusive organizational culture.
  • Conditions: Able to work hours exceeding stated office hours to get the job done; ability and willingness to travel nationally 20-50% of the time (during peak season), depending on program. This position is based in Washington, D.C.
